DINNER WAS a simple affair—steaks broiled outside on a big stainless-steel grill with Adam officiating, baked potatoes and steamed broccoli. There were just the four of them—Kath, her two sons and Tara. They talked about NASCAR mostly. Tara asked Kath more about her experience as a driver and mechanic. Tara wasn’t at all surprised that she was so knowledgeable about every aspect of stock car racing. Most wives and families associated with the sport were immersed in it.

Kath was the first to excuse herself later that evening and retire to her room. Brent hung around a while longer, telling Tara about some of the places his air-charter service had taken him. She had already researched to see if he’d made any dead-of-the-night trips to remote parts of Mexico, but her check of FAA flight plans accounted for all his aircraft’s movements, which were consistently north of the border. A few flights went to Canada and Alaska, but she found nothing suspicious, only well-documented charter trips by respected clients.

After Brent went to his quarters, Tara wondered if Adam might suggest another swim. The idea was definitely appealing; however, he didn’t.

She should have been exhausted by the day’s activities, but she wasn’t. In her room she booted up her laptop and transcribed her recordings of the day’s two interviews. Still restless an hour later, she opened one of the French doors and stepped out onto the balcony. The night air was cold but still, the lights around the pool were turned off, but she could hear the subtle splash of water. It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the darkness. Adam was swimming.

Swimming by yourself is not a safe practice, she silently admonished him. She had an obligation to join him—for his own protection—not that she believed he was in serious danger. He was a strong swimmer. The pool was large but not overwhelming.

Was he skinny-dipping? Not likely with his mother at home and his brother not far away. Is that why he hadn’t invited her to join him? Because they were nearby?

She stood in the frosty darkness, listening to the steady rhythm of his freestyle strokes, visualizing rather than seeing the flex and release of his well-toned muscles as he burned off excess energy.

She was about to turn, slip back inside and change into her new swimsuit when the sound stopped. She strained to refocus on the man pulling himself out of the water. She couldn’t be sure he was wearing the same bathing suit he’d worn earlier that day, but he was definitely wearing something. She watched him pick up a bath sheet from a nearby table—he had to be cold since none of the heating lamps were turned on—wrap himself in it and trudge off in the direction of the guest house.

“Good night, Adam,” she whispered and returned to her bedroom.

She crawled under the covers of the four-poster bed thinking about him. Something was changing between them, an indefinable affinity was developing; she couldn’t explain why.
